Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP)

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet is the biggest bet in The Rockefeller Foundation’s history. This unique platform is accelerating equitable energy transitions in low- and middle-income countries, serving as an onramp to opportunity for 1 billion people and averting carbon emissions, expanding energy access, and creating jobs in the process.

Close to half of us on Earth – around 3.6 billion people – lack access to reliable, abundant electricity. This absence deprives communities of the ability to develop – to communicate, study, irrigate crops, refrigerate foods, and run factories. Lack of power blocks their path to prosperity.

At the same time, the world is facing an existential climate crisis — and has been focused on reducing emissions in large, advanced economies to mitigate it.

To change energy for good and to alter the trajectory of the climate crisis, The Rockefeller Foundation and its partners invested $10 billion to establish The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), at COP26 in November 2021.

GEAPP recognizes that to create major change, a new approach is needed. Multiple players – governments, investors, innovators, power companies, philanthropies, and more – must come together to ensure access to electricity for all people, via low-carbon technologies, and with the economic wellbeing of communities taken into account.

GEAPP’s mission is to help catalyze a just energy transition by mobilizing public and private capital to reach one billion people with reliable, abundant, clean power across multiple continents. This work aims to avert four billion tons of carbon emissions – or about a tenth of what human activity now emits annually – and support more than 150 million sustainable livelihoods over the next decade.

This is not just another commitment. GEAPP has the resources and agreements in place to start catalyzing the big investments, technical support, and regulatory changes needed to scale the latest advances in green energy technology everywhere.
